How to Transport and Store a Kayak Without Damaging It

Transport

The best system is a proper crossbar rack on the car (Thule or Yakima) with a set of J-cradles or saddles. Straps go over the boat and clip to the crossbars. Bow and stern tie-downs to the car's frame are required for highway speeds — they stop the boat from lifting under load.

Foam blocks

Suitable for short trips at low speeds. Not suitable for highway driving on long trips. If it is your only option, use twin cam-strap tie-downs and bow-and-stern lines to the car.

Trailers

Worth it if you have multiple kayaks or a heavy pedal-drive boat. A dedicated kayak trailer is the easiest loading experience possible.

Storage

Store a kayak on its side or upside down, supported at two points near the ends of the cockpit rim. Never store it flat on a hard surface for months — the hull will deform under its own weight (a condition called "oil-canning") and never fully recover.

Outdoor storage under a cover is fine as long as sun is blocked. UV is the number-one enemy of polyethylene hulls; leaving a boat in full sun for years will chalk and weaken the plastic.

Winter

Empty every drop of water from the hull before winter storage in cold climates. Trapped water can freeze, expand, and crack the hull.

Can you carry a kayak upside down on a roof rack?

Yes, and for most polyethylene sit-in kayaks that is the right way: hull up spreads the load across the strongest part of the boat and keeps rain out of the cockpit. Sit-on-tops usually ride hull down on cradles or foam blocks.

Is it bad to store a kayak on its hull?

Over months, yes. Resting on the hull creates flat spots and oil-canning in polyethylene. Store it on its side or upside down on padded supports at roughly the one-third and two-third points along the length.

Can a kayak be stored outside in winter?

It can, if you keep it off the ground, cover it loosely so snow cannot pool inside, and leave the hatches vented rather than sealed. Direct sun does more long-term damage than cold, so shade or a UV-resistant cover matters more than temperature.
