Peter Messana
Founder, former co-owner of Austin Canoe & Kayak
In 2005 Peter and his brother Steve bought a small, single-owner kayak shop in Austin, Texas. Over the next eleven years they grew Austin Canoe & Kayak into five Texas stores, a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse, and one of the largest specialty kayak retailers in the country, before selling the business.
Running that shop meant years of fitting paddlers to boats, from first-time buyers to anglers rigging for the Texas coast, and hearing what owners loved and regretted after a season on the water.
Austin Canoe & Kayak sold everything from entry-level recreational boats to fully rigged fishing kayaks, touring boats, paddles, PFDs, racks, and the accessories that make a day on the water easier. That range meant Peter worked with every kind of paddler: families buying their first tandem, retirees looking for a stable boat they could load alone, bass anglers on Hill Country lakes, and saltwater anglers heading to the Texas coast.
Those years taught him that the right kayak is rarely the most expensive one. It is the one that fits the paddler's body, budget, storage space, and water, and that they can realistically get on and off a car. They also showed him which features hold up after a few seasons and which ones customers stopped caring about after the first trip.
TenBestKayaks is where he puts that retail experience to work: researching and comparing kayaks and gear, reading owner feedback and manufacturer specifications, and recommending the boats he would have pointed customers toward. Every guide on the site is written to answer the questions shoppers asked most often at the counter: Will it tip? Can I lift it? Will it fit me? Is it worth the extra money?
When a guide recommends a boat, it is because the specifications, owner reviews, and price line up with what first-time and experienced buyers actually need. When a product has a known weakness, the review says so.
